STARR Procedure for large piles

Tips to avoid Piles

Piles are a colloquial terminology for

· Bleeding from anal orifice while defecation - Piles

·  Painful defecation with itching and burning – Fissure

· Discharge from an opening in or around the anal region – Fistula

All these problems are lifestyle related issues

  • Constipation and straining at passing stools lead to enlargement in the soft tissues in and around anal canal
  • The enlarged tissues can get scratched by the hard feces and cause bleeding – known as classical piles.
  • The enlarged tissues can decrease the lumen/size of anal orifice leading to a tear or crack while passing stools. This crack can be very painful and highly irritating and is known as anal fissure.
  • Finally an infection in these circumstances can cause pus formation leading to pus discharging opening known as fistula

Any of these conditions can also have a plethora of symptoms, like-

  • Sense of incomplete evacuation, or inability to clear bowel
  • Peri-anal irritation, pain or burning sensation
  • Sense of the body giving away at the back passage
  • Stickiness

Hence a slight care in our lifestyle can nip the trouble in bud.

  • High roughage diet increases the bulk of stools making them easier to pass and also helps in retaining water thus causing a smooth passage.
  • One should not strain at all while passing stools.

High roughage diet can be ensured by following

  • Raw green vegetables and salads
  • Whole skin fruits
  • Sprouts
  • Whole grain flour

By simply taking a plateful of salads, some sprouts and whole grain flour bread and not straining at stools we can avoid bleeding piles and fissure. Even if they are causing problem, with some patience and adherence to these basics, the problem can be reversed.

However, if bleeding is significant or pain of fissure is crippling the surgery is curative but it should be avoided as far as possible.

In case of pus discharge (fistula) surgery is the only option.
